'''Welcome to the African American Digital Bookshelf!'''
Welcome to the African American Digital Bookshelf! This is a curated list of virtually accessible books that provide information on specific African American ancestors, historical context, and guidance to other resources.

The digital books are organized first by access ('''FamilySearch Digital Books''' and '''Other Sites' Digital Books'''), then by state. To access the FamilySearch books, users must be signed in to an account. You can create a free account [https://www.familysearch.org/register/custom/1 here].

This is a curated list of virtually accessible books that provide information on specific African American ancestors, historical context, and guidance to other resources.

The digital books are organized geographically, with books pertaining to the entire U.S. or multiple states listed under "U.S." followed by books for particular states. The digital access to these books may come from FamilySearch or elsewhere (see the "Access" column in the table). To access the FamilySearch books, users must have an account [https://www.familysearch.org/register/custom/1 here]. The books from the other websites do not require an account to read them, except for a few located at Internet Archive. You can create your free Internet Archive account [https://archive.org/account/signup here].

This table will continue to grow, so please come back often. The FamilySearch Library also houses hundreds of books on the shelves that contain valuable information for African American genealogy and research.

{|
'''Other Sites' Digital Books''' includes sources such as Internet Archive, Hathi Trust Digital Library, and Google Books. The books listed in this category do not require an account in order to read them, with the exception of a few books located at Internet Archive. However, an Internet Archive account is also free and you can create one [https://archive.org/account/signup here].

|
[mailto:digitallibrary@familysearch.org?Subject=African_American_Bookshelf_Error Submit an Error]

Note this is not an exhaustive list of books relevant to African American research available online or at FamilySearch. The Family History Library houses hundreds of books on the shelves that contain genealogically valuable information for African American genealogy. This list will grow as we become aware of additional digitized books.

Introduction[edit | edit source]

Welcome to the African American Digital Bookshelf! This is a curated list of virtually accessible books that provide information on specific African American ancestors, historical context, and guidance to other resources.

The digital books are organized first by access (FamilySearch Digital Books and Other Sites' Digital Books), then by state. To access the FamilySearch books, users must be signed in to an account. You can create a free account here.

Other Sites' Digital Books includes sources such as Internet Archive, Hathi Trust Digital Library, and Google Books. The books listed in this category do not require an account in order to read them, with the exception of a few books located at Internet Archive. However, an Internet Archive account is also free and you can create one here.

Note this is not an exhaustive list of books relevant to African American research available online or at FamilySearch. The Family History Library houses hundreds of books on the shelves that contain genealogically valuable information for African American genealogy. This list will grow as we become aware of additional digitized books.

If you have a suggestion for a book to add to this list that is virtually (and freely) accessible or have a suggestion for a book we ought to digitize, please contact us.
