British Colonization (1888-1965)[edit | edit source]

Formerly known as Southern Rhodesia. Colonization began in 1888, when Cecil John Rhodes obtained mineral rights and the area was put under control of the British South African Company. In 1923, Rhodesia became a British Crown Colony. The country declared its independence in 1965, and was renamed Zimbabwe in 1979.[1]
