Notarial records (protocoles notariaux) and indexes[edit | edit source]
Research use: Records are prime source to replace and supplement missing or incomplete parish registers. Records identify family members, give marriage information, and provide better linking information than parish registers. Many genealogists consult notarials first as they often give family group information. These records are necessary for research as many parish registers in Luxembourg have been burned or lost. Indexes for some of the records have been created.
Record type: Notarials, marriage contracts, wills, civil transactions.
Time period: About 1581 to present.
Contents: Wills (testaments), marriage contracts, divisions of estates, transfers of land and property, sale of property, succession rights, civil disputes and documentations.
Location: Local notaries, national archives.
Population coverage: 30-50%.
