History[edit | edit source]
Grenada was temporarily settled by the English in 1609 and became French in 1650. It was captured by Britain in 1762 and ceded to her by France in 1763. Captured by France in 1779, it was restored to Britain in 1783 and reoccupied by Britain in 1784. In 1833 it became part of the Windward Islands federation. When the post of governor of the Windward Islands was abolished in 1960, a new constitution was introduced. Grenada was a member of the Federation of the West Indies between 1958 and 1962; it became a fully independent state within the Commonwealth on 7 February 1974.[1]
