Tegernsee is a beautiful town on the shore of Tegernsee lake in southern Bavaria. It is in the Miesbach district, at an elevation of 747 m (2,451 ft) above sea level. There are a few other towns around this lake. They run into each other and so when looking for information on an ancestor from Tegernsee it is a good idea to check them also.(Rottach-Egern, Bad Wiesee and Gmund am Tegernsee.)
- The original settlers of the area around the Tegernsee lake were Illyrians who arrived in the early Stone Age

Lutheran Church Records[edit | edit source]
Bavaria was and is predominantly Catholic. If your ancestors lived in Tegernsee, there is a chance they affiliated with the Catholic church. However, if you do not find them in Catholic records, you should search the Lutheran records.
- According to Meyer's Gazetteer, there has been a Lutheran Church in Tegernsee since at least 1871. It still serves the people of this community.
