Uppland

History

Information about the Landskap, its location and history. Include which counties are in the Landskap. There are two counties in Uppland province, Stockholm County and Uppsala County.

The province of Uppland was mentioned first in 1296 in a document describing the province as including the Folklands of Fjärdhundraland, Attundaland, Tiundaland and Roslagen. Following the Reformation, almost all parishes in Uppland became protestant. On 25 February 1593, the clergy declared the Lutheran doctrine obligatory for the country in the Synod of Uppsala. The 17th century was a time of growth, which stopped beginning of the 18th century due to the harvest failure around 1708 and when the Russian military destroyed large coastal areas in 1719 in the Great Northern War. After the war, the province recovered lived in peace.

The population of Uppland was roughly 1,602,700 people in 2016.
