==Background==

<br>Civil registration of births, marriages, and deaths began in 1877.

'''Registro Nacional de las Personas / National Registry of Persons (RENAP)'''

In 2006, the Law of the National Registry of Persons (RENAP) began, replacing the Civil Registry. The Civil Registry began in 1877 when civil registration was separated from the Catholic Church, making a "civil" and no longer an ecclesiastical registry. The Civil Registry codes were created and updated in 1877, 1933 and the current one in 1964.

Due to this, the books of births, deaths and marriages are currently in charge of the Registro Nacional de las Personas (RENAP).
