Research use: Helps trace movements of families and provides vital information for individuals.

Record type: Poor law records kept by towns or parishes.

Time Period: 1673-1811.

Content: Records designed to curb the movements of the poor resulting in the issuance of certificates of indemnity or guarantee of admission. Contains names of all persons in the family, legal ages, places of former or proposed residence, and dates of admission.

Location: Provincial, state, municipal and city archives.

Population coverage: 10%.

Reliability: Good.[1]
