History

Brief Timeline

1560-1570: Inter-tribal conflicts over animal pelts for fur trade known as the Beaver Wars led to the establishing of Iroquois Confederacy by Deganawida, "the Peace Maker."

1776: Mohawk fight with the British; Mohawk leader, Thayendanega or Joseph Brant

1783: At the end of the Revolutionary War Chief Joseph Brant resettled his followers to land allotted to them in Ontario, Canada 1784: Treaty 1789: Treaty 1794: Treaty 1797: Treaty

The majority of records of individuals were those created by the agencies. Some records may be available to tribal members through the tribal headquarters.They were (and are) the local office of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and were charged with maintaining records of the activities of those under their responsibility.
