| ==Historical Background==
| |
| Christianity is the largest religion in Seychelles, with Roman Catholics having the most adherents. The 2010 government census estimated that the population of Seychelles is 76% '''Roman Catholic''' and 6% '''Anglican'''. There are other Christian groups, including '''Baptists, Seventh-day Adventists, Assemblies of God, the Pentecostal Church, the Pentecostal Assembly, Nazarites, Orthodox Church''' and '''Jehovah's Witnesses'''. The initial settlers in Seychelles were Roman Catholics, and the country has remained so, despite ineffective British efforts to establish Protestantism in the islands during the nineteenth century. Approximately 6% of Seychellois are Anglicans most coming from families converted by missionaries in the late 19th and early 20th century. Evangelical Protestant churches are active and growing, among them Pentecostals and Seventh-day Adventists. <ref> Wikipedia contributors, "Seychelles", in ''Wikipedia: the Free Encyclopedia,'' https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seychelles, accessed 22 March 2020. </ref><ref> Wikipedia contributors, "Religion in Seychelles", in ''Wikipedia: the Free Encyclopedia,'' https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religion_in_Seychelles, accessed 22 March 2020. </ref><br>

| ==Information Recorded in the Records==
| |
| Different denominations, different time periods, and practices of different record keepers will effect how much information can be found in the records. This outline will show the types of details which '''might''' be found (best case scenario):
| |
| ===Baptisms===
| |
| In Catholic and Anglican records, children were usually baptized a few days after birth, and therefore, the baptism record proves date of birth. Other religions, such as Baptists, baptized at other points in the member's life. Baptism registers might give:
| |
| {|
| |
| |-
| |
| |style="width:25%; padding-right:10px"|
| |
| *baptism date
| |
| *the infant's name
| |
| *parents' names
| |
| *father's occupation
| |
| |style="width:38%; padding-right:10px"|
| |
| *status of legitimacy
| |
| *occasionally, names of grandparents
| |
| *names of witnesses or godparents, who may be relatives
| |

| |
| *birth date and place
| |
| *the family's place of residence
| |
| *death information, as an added note or signified by a cross
| |
| |}
| |
|
| |
| ===Marriages===
| |
| Marriage registers can give:
| |
| {|
| |
| |-
| |
| |style="width:33%; padding-right:10px; vertical-align:top"|
| |
| *the marriage date
| |

| |
| *birth dates and places for the bride and groom

| |
| *the names of previous spouses and their death dates
| |
| *names of witnesses, who might be relatives.

|
| |
| ===Burials===
| |
| Burial registers may give:
| |
| {|
| |
| |-

| === Historical Background ===
| |
| The Catholic Church in Seychelles is part of the worldwide Catholic Church, under the spiritual leadership of the Pope. The initial settlers in Seychelles were Roman Catholics, and the country has remained so. There are around 70,000 Catholics in the Seychelles - almost 76.2% of the total population. Seychelles forms a single diocese - the Diocese of Port Victoria.<ref> Wikipedia contributors, "Religion in Seychelles", in ''Wikipedia: the Free Encyclopedia,'' https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religion_in_Seychelles, accessed 14 March 2020. </ref><ref> Wikipedia contributors, "Catholic Church in Seychelles", in ''Wikipedia: the Free Encyclopedia,'' https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catholic_Church_in_Seychelles, accessed 22 March 2020. </ref>

| Seychelles is included in the Archdiocese of Irinoupolis.
| |
| ===Historical Background===
| |
| The presence of Orthodox Christians in the republic is recent as Orthodox Christians became citizens of Seychelles without any organized Orthodox Christian communities. Srdjan Janosevic, a Serbian by birth and a naturalized Seychelles citizen, who retired in 2008 after working with the airline industry in the republic for 23 years, became interested in the spiritual work of the Orthodox Church. In 2009, Metropolitan Dimitrios (Zaharengas) of Irinoupolis, whose jurisdiction the Metropolis of Tanzania and Seychelles is in, visited Seychelles and established a parish. He also asked Srdjan to enter the priesthood. After he was ordained deacon in Tanzania later in 2009, Deacon Srdjan traveled to Greece for further study and was ordained a priest in Greece in December as the first resident priest of Seychelles.<ref>"Seychelles", in OrthodoxWiki, https://orthodoxwiki.org/Seychelles, accessed 23 March 2020.</ref>
