Brief History[edit | edit source]
The 23rd Battalion, Tennessee Infantry (Newman's) was organized at camp near Murfreesboro, Tennessee, in November, 1862. In December, 1863. it was included in the surrender on April 26, 1865. [1]
Companies in this Regiment with the Counties of Origin[edit | edit source]
Men often enlisted in a company recruited in the counties where they lived though not always. After many battles, companies might be combined because so many men were killed or wounded. However if you are unsure which company your ancestor was in, try the company recruited in his county first.
- Company A - Captain W.P. Simpson
- Company B - Captain William T. Powers
- Company C - Captain Thomas J. Stanfield - Men from Bedford County.
- Company D - Captain William J. Awalt - Some men from Bedford County.
- Company E - Captain James L. Moore - Men from Frankln County and Lincoln Counties.
