The Northern German Confederation came into the existence in August 1866, after the end of the Austro-Prussian War, as a military alliance of 22 states from the northern part of Germany. The Northern German Confederation came into the existence in August 1866, after the end of the Austro-Prussian War, as a military alliance of 22 states from the northern part of Germany. It was a first true state of Germany. In July 1867, it was transformed to a federal state. It ceased to exist with the creation of the German Empire 21 March 1871.
The leading state was Kingdom of Preussen.
