Recommendations:

1. Search Germany Online Genealogy Records in the first chart.
2. Prior to 1871, Germany consisted of many countries which united in 1871. Records were kept or organized by these countries/states. Search the state databases at Online Germany Genealogy Records by State. For help determining the pre-1871 country of a particular town, use Meyers Gazetteer.
3. Only a small percentage of German records are online. Many more have been microfilmed. Use the FamilySearch Catalog to find microfilmed records that can be searched at your local Family History Center or the Family History Library in Salt lake City, Utah.
4. Many more records are available in Germany. Germany Websites--Reference and Training lists many online sources for determining where you might access these records in archives, churches, and other repositories in Germany.
