| In 2006, the Law of the National Registry of Persons (RENAP) began, replacing the Civil Registry. The Civil Registry began in 1877 when civil registration was separated from the Catholic Church, making a "civil" and no longer an ecclesiastical registry. The Civil Registry codes were created and updated in 1877, 1933 and the current one in 1964.
