Antigua was first colonized by English settlers in 1632; nearby Barbuda was colonized in 1661 from Antigua. Antigua was first colonized by English settlers in 1632; nearby Barbuda was colonized in 1661 from Antigua. Antigua and Barbuda formed part of the Leeward Islands Federation from 1871 until 1956, when Antigua and Barbuda became a separate Crown Colony.
