The first census in Benin was taken in 1893, the year after it became a French possession. Information that may be found in the census includes:
Research use: Helpful for establishing family relationships.  Their value is particularly important since other record types are often not available.

*Number of households for each village
*Unmarried mature males
*Widows who are heads of households
*Brief physical descriptions
*Estimates of the value of crop yields and income from livestock
*Military service


Records are housed at the National archives in Porto Novo. There is not sufficient information to make an accurate measure of overall population coverage.
