In 1574, Palau became part of the Spanish East Indies. In 1899, the islands became part of German New Guinea. After World War I, the Palau islands were made a part of the Japanese South Seas Mandate. In 1947, Palau was made a part of the United States Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands.
