Miami Trail was originally a buffalo trail that was used as a Native American trading and war path and later a military road. The name was derived from the powerful Miami tribe. Native Americans and white men established villages and towns along the trail. Wars were lost and won along the Miami Trail.

The Miami Trail ran from the Ohio River, at the mouth of the Licking River, northward and it had several branches culminating in the valleys of the Little Miami and Great Miami Rivers.
