WieWasWie

WieWasWie gives you a quick way to find your Dutch forebears, both in the Netherlands and overseas. Your search is in the most accurate source for Dutch genealogy, the Civil Register. And it is not difficult!

WieWasWie is a national Dutch database containing information for use in genealogical research. It is a joint initiative by the national archive services and the regional historical centres. This means that it is not a database of documents held by the Nationaal Archief.

WieWasWie holds data from the Civil Register. This is the official record of births, marriages and deaths in the Netherlands. It has existed in most of the country since 1811, but in the province of Limburg somewhat longer. Although WieWasWie contains a large proportion of this data, not all Dutch local authorities are yet included. Some provinces, such as Zuid-Holland, are still barely represented.

The database also contains some details of baptisms, marriages and deaths maintained by church parishes prior to 1811, as well as memoranda of inheritance from the 19th century.

WieWasWie contains 87 million names as of January 2014.

A record of birth provides you with the following information:

• The name of the child
• The names of the parents
• The exact date of birth
• The place of birth

A record of marriage provides you with the following information:

• The names and ages of the bride and groom
• In most cases, the names of the bride's and the groom's parents
• In most cases, the places of birth of the bride and groom
• Whether the bride is a widow or the groom a widower
• In most cases the profession of groom and/or bride

A record of death provides you with the following information:

• The name of the deceased
• The exact date of death
• In most cases, the name of the deceased's parents
• In most cases, the age of the deceased
• In some cases, the deceased's place of birth
• In some cases, the name of the deceased's spouse
  

Zoekakten

• Zoekakten allows easier access to images of records found on FamilySearch.org for The Netherlands and Belgium. Search by province, then community. Choose the record type and time period to link to the mages. To some indexes and special collections are also found on this site [emigrants, military, various religious groups].

Other Dutch Web Sites

Other genealogical websites in the Netherlands include. Most of these are free sites.

• Geaknowhow.net Digital Resources. This site includes research tips, maps, and other reference material for research in Belgium and the Netherlands. In addition, there are links to Internet resources and bibliographies of other digital source material. Basic instructions in English are available. To get to the digital sources, click on the folder titled “Digital Resources Netherlands and Belgium”. The left-hand navigation bar includes general information, passenger lists, and then names each province in both countries with the sections:”Internet” [lists links to various internet resources for towns in this province] and “disk/cd-r” [material available on diskettes or CD-Rom, either free or for purchase]. So-called “bulletin-board systems” are listed below. Abbreviations are explained under “Explanations” on the bottom of the left-hand bar.
• Centraal Bureau voor Genealogie The CBG is the ideal starting point for most research into Dutch ancestors or Dutch migrants who settled in other countries in the world.  Check your family name in their online catalog. Their digital reading room provides access to an increasing number of digitized collections.

Regional Websites

Examples of City- and state archives with extensive online indexes Note: all of these sites and more can be accessed indirectly through http://www.archiefnet.nl

• The Website of the Rotterdam city archive includes a “digital pedigree” section, where all the church records through 1811 for greater Rotterdam, as well as some civil registration records, have been indexed. Click on “stamboom” on top, which leads to the “Digitale Stamboom”, or “digital pedigree”. If you click on “English” in the top right first, the table of contents for the digital pedigree will come up in English. Click on “Zoeken” to get to the search interface.

• Amsterdam archives – Includes indexes and images of various sources, including “persoonskarten” and some baptisms and burials. The English interface does not allow access to as many databases as the Dutch one. On the “indexes” page each record group is followed by “zoek” [search index], “voorbeeld” [shows an annotated sample record], and “handleiding” [user instructions for the database]. Indexes are available online; scans of the actual records can be bought with a credit card.

• “Drenlias” Drenthe province archive under “genealogie”, emigrant database, photographs, maps etc., and indexes to church and civil registration records of Drenthe province, with abstracts.

• Frisian Center for Family and Local History. Under “Voorouders” (ancestors) you will find indexes to several record types, including church records and civil registration, for the time periods before and after 1811.

• Groningen Provincial Archive; includes historical material, photographs and various research guides in Dutch.

• Genealogical section of the Groningen Archives with access to indexes and images of civil and church records. Search by name or browse the records.

• The Website of the Delft City Archive, which also includes a section of indexed church records through 1812 for Delft and Pijnacker. The archive is also in the process of posting the civil registration records of Delft and the surrounding towns.

• Zeeland state archive website. A link to “English” is on found on the bottom right front page. The genealogical data base ISIS includes indexes to church records, civil registration, emigrant lists, and other sources.

• Zeeland Archive genealogical Website provides indexes to various record sets.

• Overijssel archive; includes indexed civil registration indexes and a large collection of historic picture post cards. For indexes, click on “zoeken en finden”, then “Databanken”; for maps click on either map set under “woonomgeving”; for the photograph collection click on “beeldbank” [=picture collection”]

• The Leiden city archive Website includes a search for “personen”” [persons], which will eventually include all persons recorded in the church-and civil registration registers.. The search is by name. To see which records are included, click on “Zoeken in de genealogische Bestanden” in the red field on the bottom right.

• City Archive of Schiedam. Genealogical material is found under the tab “stamboom”. You can request scans of records without charge, and they will be sent to you by e-mail.

• Noord-Brabant State Archive genealogical website for northeastern Noord-Brabant; go to “mijn stamboom achterhalen”

• Breda City Archive Web site, genealogical section.

• Veluwse Geslachten Genealogical Society Web site. The “Weluwe” is a cultural district that includes the following municipalities: Apeldoorn, Arnhem, Barneveld, Brummen, Ede, Elburg, Epe, Ermelo, Harderwijk, Hattem, Heerde, Hoevelaken, Nunspeet, Nijkerk, Oldebroek, Putten, Renkum, Rheden, Rozendaal, Scherpenzeel, Voorst en Wageningen. The society has published extensively.

DUTCH WEB SITES- VOCABULARY LIST This list includes words and phrases used on commonly used Dutch genealogical web-sites. It is not a substitute for a dictionary, but should help the user successfully negotiate the World Wide Web in search of family history information.
