Introduction[edit | edit source]
Heraldry first appeared in Spain in approximately the beginning of the eleventh century. Heraldry originated in Europe from a need for knights and nobles to distinguish themselves from one another on the battlefield, in jousts and in tournaments. Some knights wore armor from head to toe and were often in leadership positions, so it was important to be able to recognize them on the battlefield. See Spanish heraldry
