The Poznań Project, was launched with the objective of creating a database of transcribed marriage records from the entire Duchy of Poznań (Posen), one of the provinces of the 19th century Kingdom of Prussia. Most documents pertaining to the emigrants from the Poznań province only mention "Posen" as the location of origin. "Posen" can stand for the region of Poznań as well as for the city of Poznań itself.

There are about 540 parishes within the Poznań province. In spring of 2009, database contained about 60% of the total material of Catholic marriages in years 1835-1884 (and 25% of the Lutheran material).

The 1835-1884 timeframe was selected for practical reasons, as it matches the period of largest emigration from the Poznan province. Still, the database may contain marriages from 1820 until 1889 and cover areas adjacent to the Poznan province.
