Brief History[edit | edit source]
The 118th Regiment was organized at Lima, Cincinnati and Camp Mansfield, Ohio, August and September, 1862. It had duty at Raleigh, Greensboro and Salisbury until June and mustered out June 24, 1865. [1]
For more information about this Regiment and its history, see:
- Larry Stevens' Ohio in the Civil War web page for the 118th Ohio Infantry.
- The Civil War Archive section, 118th Regiment Infantry, (accessed 5 September 2012).
- The Wikipedia article on the 118th Ohio Infantry includes a short history of the battles fought by this regiment, movements, and source information.
Companies in this Regiment with the Counties of Origin[edit | edit source]
Men often enlisted in a company recruited in the counties where they lived, though not always. After many battles, companies might be combined because so many men were killed or wounded. However if you are unsure which company your ancestor was in, try the company recruited in his county first.
