The Diocese of Ely forms part of the Province of Canterbury of the Church of England.
History[edit | edit source]
The diocese was created in 1109 out of part of the Diocese of Lincoln to cover the historic county of Cambridgeshire and the Isle of Ely. The boundaries have been subsequently altered various times. Bedfordshire and Huntingdonshire were added in 1837 from the Diocese of Lincoln, as was the Sudbury archdeaconry in Suffolk, from the Diocese of Norwich. In 1914 Bedfordshire became part of the Diocese of St Albans, and western Suffolk became part of the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich, whilst Ely took the western part of the Diocese of Norwich. Peterborough remains the seat of the Diocese of Peterborough.
The present area of the diocese covers:
- Cambridgeshire (except the Soke of Peterborough)
- Norfolk west of the River Great Ouse
Archdeaconries and deaneries[edit | edit source]
The diocese is divided into two Archdeaconries containing a total of fourteen deaneries:
- the Archdeaconry of Cambridge
- comprises the Deaneries of Bourn; Cambridge; Fordham and Quy; Granta; North Stowe; and Shingay
- the Archdeaconry of Huntingdon and Wisbech
- comprises the Deaneries of Ely; Fincham and Feltwell; Huntingdon; March; St. Ives; St. Neots; Wisbech Lynn Marshland; and Yaxley
