The Diocese of Chichester forms part of the Province of Canterbury of the Church of England.

History[edit | edit source]

The diocese was created in 1075 as a replacement for the Diocese of Selsey, which had been based at Selsey Abbey from 681.

The present area of the diocese covers:

Archdeaconries and deaneries[edit | edit source]

The diocese is divided into three Archdeaconries containing a total of twenty-one deaneries:

  • the Archdeaconry of Chichester
    • comprises the Deaneries of Arundel and Bognor; Brighton; Chichester; Hove; and Worthing
  • the Archdeaconry of Horsham
    • comprises the Deaneries of Cuckfield; East Grinstead; Horsham; Hurst; Midhurst; Petworth; Storrington; and Westbourne
  • the Archdeaconry of Lewes & Hastings
    • comprises the Deaneries of Battle and Bexhill; Dallington; Eastbourne; Hastings; Lewes and Seaford; Rotherfield; Rye; and Uckfield
