The first land survey, known as the Domesday Book, was compiled in 1086 by order of William the Conqueror. Tenants and subtenants are listed, along with a description of their land holdings. The survey covered all of England, except the city of London and the counties of Cumberland, Durham, Rutland, Lancashire, Northumberland, and Westmorland. However, parts of these counties are included with the entries of other counties. The Domesday Book, edited by John Morris, is a transcription of the survey. The English call tombstones "monumental inscriptions" (or M.I.). Monumental inscriptions may provide birth, marriage, and death information. They sometimes give more information than the parish burial register or civil death certificate—information such as military service, occupation, or cause of death. Cemetery records are especially helpful for identifying ancestors not in other records. Because relatives may be buried in adjoining plots, search the entire record.
