Vital Records consist of births, adoptions, marriages, divorces, and deaths recorded on registers, certificates, and documents.

In Massachusetts, the original vital records (birth, marriage, or death)are found with the clerk of the town or city where the event occurred. The recording of these records was ordered by the government as early as 1639, though not all places followed the law.
