Alternately spelled Nantcwnlle and Nancwnlle. "NANTCWNLLE (NANT-GYNLLO), a parish, partly in the upper division of the hundred of MOYTHEN, and partly in the lower division of the hundred of PENARTH, county of CARDIGAN, SOUTH WALES, 8 miles (N.) from Lampeter, containing 686 inhabitants. This parish derives its name from a small brook which flows into the river Aêron by which it is intersected, and from the dedication of its church to St. Cynllo, an eminent British saint, who flourished about the middle of the fifth century. The river Aêron here forms a boundary between the hundreds of Moythen and Penarth: the vale through which it flows abounds with pleasingly varied scenery, and the views over the surrounding country combine many objects of interest.The parish constitutes a prebend in the collegiate church of Brecknock, valued in the king's books at £7.6.8., and in the patronage of the Bishop of St.David's. The living is a discharged vicarage, in the archdeaconry of Cardigan, and diocese of St. David's, rated in the king's books at £3.13. 4., endowed with £ 600 royal bounty, and £ 600 parliamentary grant, and in the patronage of the Bishop of St. David's. The tithes are divided between the prebendary and the vicar, the former of whom has two-thirds, and the latter one-third. The church, dedicated to St. Cynllo, is a small plain edifice, consisting of a nave and chancel, and is not distinguished by any architectural details of importance. There are some remains of an ancient intrenchment, called "Pen y Gaer."
