Directories, originally alphabetical lists of the names and addresses of tradesmen, was very much a consequence of the growth of permanent shopping and trading centres in the 18th century.

The first commercial directories were simple lists of tradesmen arranged in alphabetical order by surname and forename, showing their trades and addresses. The names of the tradesmen may be subdivided into categories by trade in a classified directory.

The individual names have been removed but family names and locations are still on pages and links that may take you to the original pages and individual names.[[Wales}}{{Category:Wales]]
