  • 1st Battalion, Mississippi Cavalry (State Troops) (Ham's)
    [Also known as Ham's Regiment, Mississippi Cavalry / 16th Battalion State Cavalry]
    Organized May 18, 1863 at Guntown. 
    Re-inlisted in early 1864 in the State service and transferred in May to the Confederate States service.

  • 2nd Regiment, Mississippi State Cavalry (Smith’s) (Lowry’) [Also called 6th MS State Cavalry]
    Organized April 1863 to state service.
    Transferred to confederate service in May 1864.
    Consolidated March 20, 1865 with Ashcroft's, Ham's, and Lowry's Cavalry Regiment.
    Commanded by Colonels J.P. Smith of State troops, William L. Lowry, of Confederate States troops, Lieutenant-Colonels William L. Lowry, Joseph A. Johnson. Major L.L. Marshall.

    Formed by consolidating the 2nd and 3rd Battalions State Cavalry.
    Surrendered in May, 1865. 
    Commanded by Colonel Thomas C. Ashcraft, Lieutenant Colonel Thomas W. Harris, and Major E.L. Hawkins.
  • 3rd Regiment, Mississippi Cavalry
    Organized during the spring of 1863 as the 3rd Mississippi State Cavalry . 
    Mustered into Confederate service in April, 1864. 
    Commanded by Colonel John McGuirk, Lieutenant Colonel H.H. Barksdale, and Major Thomas W. Webb.
  • 4th Regiment, Mississippi Cavalry
    4th Cavalry Regiment [also called 4th Battalion]
    Organized during the fall of 1862 by consolidating Hughes' and Stockdale's Mississippi Cavalry Battalions. 
    Commanded by Colonel C.C. Wilbourn, Lieutenant Colonels Cornelius McLaurin and Thomas R. Stockdale, and Major James M. Norman.

  • 5th Regiment, Mississippi Cavalry
    Assembled at Columbus, Mississippi during the summer of 1863.
    Commanded by Colonel James Z. George; Lieutenant Colonels James A. Barksdale, P.H. Echols, W.M. Reed, and Nathaniel Wickliffe; and Majors W.G. Henderson and William B. Perry.
Associated unit:
19th (George's) Cavalry Battalion, organized during the late summer of 1863.
Disbanded early in 1864.
Some members joined the 5th Mississippi Cavalry Regiment.
Commanded by Lieutenant Colonel James Z. George was its commander.
  • 6th Regiment, Mississippi Cavalry
    Organized late in 1863.
    Mustered into Confederate service in January 1864. 
    Consolidated with the 8th Mississippi Cavalry in February 1865.
    Surrendered in May 1865. 
    Commanded by Colonel Isham Harrison, Lieutenant Colonels Thomas C. Lipscomb and Thomas M. Nelson, and Major R.G. Brown.
  • 7th Regiment, Mississippi Cavalry [Also known as 1st Partisan Rangers]
    Organized during the early summer of 1862.
    Surrendered on May 4,1865. 
    Commanded by Colonels William C. Falkner and Samuel M. Hyams, Jr., Lieutenant Colonels L.B. Hovis and James M. Park, and Majors W.L. Davis and William N. Stansell.
  • 8th Regiment, Mississippi Cavalry [Also called the 19th Regiment or Battalion]
    Formed in July, 1864, by consolidating the six-company 19th Battalion Mississippi Cavalry and four companies raised behind Federal lines. 
    Consolidated with the 6th Mississippi Cavalry in February 1865.
    Surrendered in May.
    Commanded by Colonel William L. Duff, Lieutenant Colonel William L. Walker, and Major Thomas A. Mitchell.
Predecessor unit:
19th (Duff's) Cavalry Battalion organized during the late summer of 1863 with six companies. 
Merged into the 8th Mississippi Cavalry Regiment on July 19, 1864. 
Commanded by Lieutenant Colonel William L. Duff and Major William L. Walker.
  • 9th Regiment, Mississippi Cavalry
    Formed in December, 1864 by consolidating the 17th Mississippi and 17th Tennessee Cavalry Battalions. 
    Surrendered in May, 1865. 
    Commanded by Colonel Horace H. Miller, Lieutenant Colonel Abner C. Steede, and Major E.J. Sanders.
  • 11th Regiment, Mississippi Cavalry
    Formed during the spring of 1864 using Perrin's Battalion State Cavalry as its nucleus.
    Surrendered on May 4, 1865. 
    Commanded by Colonel Robert O. Perrin, Lieutenant Colonel H.L. Muldrow, and Major Abner Reed.

  • 12th Regiment, Mississippi Cavalry [Also called 16th Confederate Cavalry] 
    Organized during the summer of 1863.
    Commanded by Colonel C.G. Armistead, Lieutenant Colonel Philip B. Spence, and Major William Yerger, Jr.
  • 17th Battalion, Mississippi Cavalry
    Formed during the early spring of 1863 with two companies, later increased to seven.
    Later merged into the 9th Mississippi Cavalry Regiment.
    Commanded by Major Abner C. Steede.
  • 18th Regiment, Mississippi Cavalry [Also called 18th Regiment] 
    Organized during the late fall of 1862 with eight companies.
    Commanded by Colonel Alex. H. Chalmers, Lieutenant Colonel J. Waverly Smith, and Major William R. Mitchell.
  • 19th Battalion Mississippi Cavalry (Duff's)
    Organized during the late summer of 1863 with six companies.
    Merged into the 8th Mississippi Cavalry Regiment on July 19, 1864.
    Commanded by Lieutenant Colonel William L. Duff and Major William L. Walker.

  • 28th Regiment, Mississippi Cavalry
    Formed during the spring of 1862.
    January, 1862, its designation was changed to 2nd Confederate Infantry Regiment. Commanded by Colonels John D. Martin and Edward F. McGehee, and Major Thomas H. Mangum.
  • 38th Regiment, Mississippi Cavalry
    Formed during the summer of 1862.
    Surrendered in May, 1865. 
    Commanded by Colonels Fleming W. Adams and Preston Brent, Lieutenant Colonel Walter L. Keirn, and Majors Franklin W. Foxworth adn R.C. McCay.

  • Adams' Company, Mississippi (Holmes County Independent) 
    Wirt Adams' Cavalry Regiment [also called 1st Mississippi Cavalry] was organized during the summer of 1861.
    Mustered into Confederate service at Jackson, Mississippi.
    Surrendered in May, 1865. 
    Commanded by Colonels Wirt Adams and Robert C. Wood, Jr.; Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Lewers; and Majors Stephen B. Cleveland, James Hagan, and Isaac F. Harrison.

Units D through G[edit | edit source]

  • English's Company, Mississippi Light Artillery
    Quitman Light Artillery was organized in Quitman County, Mississippi, during May, 1862.
    Captured in July 1863 and after the exchange it was not reorganized.
    Commanded by Richard T. English and William S. Lovell.

Units H through L[edit | edit source]

  • Ham's Regiment, Mississippi Cavalry
    Oganized in May, 1864, by transferring the 16th Mississippi State Cavalry along with a number of state companies to regular service.
    Surrendered on May 4, 1865. 
    Commanded by Colonel T.W. Ham, Lieutenant Colonel William P. Curlee, and Major George W. Bynum.
  • Jeff Davis Legion, Mississippi Cavalry
    Organized in January, 1862, using the 2nd Mississippi Cavalry Battalion as its nucleus.
    Commanded by Colonel William T. Martin, Lieutenant Colonels William G. Conner and J. Fred. Waring, and Major Ivey F. Lewis and W.M. Stone.
2nd Cavalry Battalion was organized at Manassas, Virginia, in October, 1861.
Merged into the Jeff. Davis Mississippi Cavalry Legion in January, 1862.
Commanded by Major William T. Martin.
