Two&nbsp;of the islands, Voorne-Putten and Rozenburg, located&nbsp;South-West of Rotterdam in Zuid-Holland, have a number of small municipalities. A reginal archive has been set up to include&nbsp;ancestral information for the following cities,&nbsp;towns or villages: Bernisse,&nbsp;Brielle, Hellevoetsluis, Nieuw-Helvoet (now a part of Hellevoetsluis), Rozenburg, Spijkenisse and Westvoorne. It also includes a historical outline of the following townships Abbenbroek, Biert, Blankenburg, and the city of Brielle. Some of the historical data goes back to the 12th century. A free website was created&nbsp;as a&nbsp;[http://www.streekarchiefvpr.nl Regional Archive] that can be&nbsp;accessed via the internet.&nbsp;&nbsp;
The province of South Holland as it is today has its origins in the period of French rule from 1795 to 1813.
After the defeat of the French in 1813, this organisation remained unchanged for a year or so. When the 1814 Constitution was introduced, most borders were restored to their situation before the French period. The north and south of Holland were reunited as the province of Holland but in 1840, it was decided to once again split Holland into North and South Holland. This was because the province was thought too dominant in area, population and wealth.<br>

== Population Registers (Bevolkingregisters) ==
The church records for most of the parishes in Zuid-Holland have been indexed by surname in 10 year increments - known as "family reconstruction". This family reconstruction, based on baptismal records from 1695-1815 (often includes the marriage date of the parents), refers to the so called "Gele Klappers" (yellow indices) of the baptisms (dopen); they contain information from 157 towns; they contain more than 1 million names. The cities of Brielle, Delft, Dordrecht, Gorinchem (Gorkum), Gouda, 's-Gravenhage (Den Haag or The Hague), Leyden, Maassluis, Rotterdam, Schiedam, and Vlaardingen (with their annexed municipalities) are not included in this index.

From 1850 onwards the Government has recorded the address and basic details such as name, birthdate, birthplace, occupation and religion of all residents of the Netherlands.  
These records are available for research in the National Archive in Den Haag and on microfilms in the Family History Library in Salt Lake City and its Centers around the world. You can find the film numbers for these records on the FamilySearch catalog under "Zuid-Holland" - church records indexes. Then choose "Klappers op de doop- en huwelijksregisters in Zuid-Holland van vóór 1812". See: {{FHL|264512|title-id|disp=Zuid-Holland bapstism indexes}}. It is important that you remember which district number and name your town belongs to as you will need that information when you search for the right film.

Dutch Genealogy Super DVD Includes all christenings in 157 small towns of Zuid-Holland over a period of 118 years, from 1695 to 1812. For more information see: research tools
That Super DVD lists the entire family. It takes a little time to figure out how to use it, but once you do, it is invaluable if you have ancestors in the small towns of South-Holland (does not include the big towns of Rotterdam, The Hague, Delft, etc.) You can see it at http://dutchgenealogy.com. By the way, the DVD also includes other records including wonderful records from the small towns around Utrecht provence. It does not have anythingl for the city of Utrecth, however

Two of the islands, Voorne-Putten and Rozenburg, located South-West of Rotterdam in Zuid-Holland, have a number of small municipalities. A reginal archive has been set up to include ancestral information for the following cities, towns or villages: Bernisse, Brielle, Hellevoetsluis, Nieuw-Helvoet (now a part of Hellevoetsluis), Rozenburg, Spijkenisse and Westvoorne. It also includes a historical outline of the following townships Abbenbroek, Biert, Blankenburg, and the city of Brielle. Some of the historical data goes back to the 12th century. A free website was created as a Regional Archive that can be accessed via the internet.

One of the great Dutch forefathers was Johannes Reijniersz Vermeer or Jan Vermeer. He was baptized 31 October 1632, married Catharina Bolenes 4 May 1653 in Delft and died 15 December 1675. He is now acknowledged as one of the greatest painters of the Dutch Golden Age, and is particularly renowned for his masterly treatment and use of light in his work.

Research Tools[edit | edit source]

The church records for most of the parishes in Zuid-Holland have been indexed by surname in 10 year increments - known as "family reconstruction". This family reconstruction, based on baptismal records from 1695-1815 (often includes the marriage date of the parents), refers to the so called "Gele Klappers" (yellow indices) of the baptisms (dopen); they contain information from 157 towns; they contain more than 1 million names. The cities of Brielle, Delft, Dordrecht, Gorinchem (Gorkum), Gouda, 's-Gravenhage (Den Haag or The Hague), Leyden, Maassluis, Rotterdam, Schiedam, and Vlaardingen (with their annexed municipalities) are not included in this index.

These records are available for research in the National Archive in Den Haag and on microfilms in the Family History Library in Salt Lake City and its Centers around the world. You can find the film numbers for these records on the FamilySearch catalog under "Zuid-Holland" - church records indexes. Then choose "Klappers op de doop- en huwelijksregisters in Zuid-Holland van vóór 1812". See: Zuid-Holland bapstism indexes. It is important that you remember which district number and name your town belongs to as you will need that information when you search for the right film.
