This attribute controls the content of the description and og:description elements. | Although the former Ottoman Empire endorsed Islam as the state religion, Türkiye has been a secular state since 1928, with freedom of religion enshrined in its constitution. The population is 98% Muslim, most of them Turks, while Muslim Kurds constitute about 17% of the total population. Two-thirds of the Muslims in Türkiye belong to the Sunni branch of Islam, with the other third as Shiites. The Kurds are also Sunni Muslims. |
