Sequoyah High School originated in 1871, originated as a boarding school operated by the Cherokee Nation. It has undergone several name changes, including Cherokee Orphan Training School (prior to 1 October 1924), Sequoyah Orphan Training School, and Sequoyah Vocational School. It was operated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs from 1914 to 1985, when the Cherokee Nation again assumed its operation.
