Article description: (description ) This attribute controls the content of the description and og:description elements. | Before the introduction of the secret ballot in 1872 the votes at parliamentary elections were publicly declared. No ballot paper was involved but at the hustings a record was made of the name and address of the voter and of the candidate(s) for whom he voted. The resulting "poll books" were often printed afterwards and many manuscript and printed poll books survive, the majority between 1694 and 1872. They form useful county and borough directories of those who held a small amount of freehold land. |
