Article description: (description) This attribute controls the content of the description and og:description elements. | Norwegian control of the Faroes continued until 1814. When the union between Denmark and Norway was dissolved as a result of the Treaty of Kiel in 1814, Denmark retained possession of the Faroe Islands. In 1816, the Faroe Islands became a county within the Danish Kingdom. Denmark granted the Faroe Islands home-rule with a high degree of local autonomy in 1948. In 1990, Danish archives for the Faroe Islands (with the exception of military archives) were handed over to the Faroe Islands National Archives. |
