Starting in 1790, federal population schedules were taken every 10 years in the United States. Click here for more information about federal census records. Alaska was purchased by the United States in 1867; however, it was not significantly settled until the turn of the twentieth century. Alaska was first enumerated in 1870, but due to extreme weather and spring hunting, the enumerators did not get accurate counts until the 1900 census.
