2nd Infantry Battalion was organized at Jackson, Mississippi, during the summer of 1861 with five companies, later increased to six. In Novemer, 1862, additional companies joined the unit, and it became the 48th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry. Its commanders were Lieutenant Colonels Thomas B. Manlove, John G. Taylor, and William S. Wilson.[1]
