Description[edit | edit source]

The county was named for James Webb, who served as Secretary of the Treasury, Secretary of State, and Attorney General of the Republic of Texas, and later judge of the United States District Court following the admission of Texas to statehood. The county is located in the southwest area of the state.[1] Encinal County, now defunct and never formally organized, comprised the western part of Webb County from 1856 to 1899. Settled by the Spanish and Indians in 1748.
