County Information

Description

The county was named for a "green valley", was named for a battle of the American Civil War. The county is located in the west-central area of the state.[1] In 1862, soldiers of Sibley's Brigade took part in the Texas invasion of New Mexico Territory, where they captured several artillery pieces at the Battle of Val Verde. The first settlement was in 1808 by a Mexican Priest. The first Anglo-American settlement was established in 1868.
