Historical Overview
History
Tullowphelim, or Tullow, is a market and post-town, and a parish in the barony of Rathvilly, county of Carlow, and province of Leinster. It is located a little over seven miles southeast of Carlow and and almost forty-seven miles from Dublin, on the road from Carlow to Newtownbarry.
Tullow and the surrounding area was early on given to the Butlers, Earls of Ormonde. The title of Viscount Tullowphelim was enjoyed successively by two branches of the Butler family, both of which have been extinct for many years.
The living is a rectory, in the diocese of Leighlin, and in the patronage of the Marquess of Ormonde. In the Roman Catholic divisions the parish is the head of a union or district, comprising the parishes of Tullow and Tankardstown, and part of those of Ardristan, Pubbledrum, and Urglin. There were, at one time, three chapels in the union, one of which was in the parish.
Localities
The parish of Tullowphelim is surrounded by the parishes of Aghade, Ardoyne, Ardristan, Fennagh, Grangeford, Killerrig, Kineagh, Rathmore, Rathvilly, and Straboe, as well as the county of Wicklow. It is located in the poor law union of Carlow.
