This is a historical and genealogical guide to the municipality of Angra do Heroísmo.
History
- Population about 36,000.
- Founded in 1400's.
- By 1534 it became a city.
- Seat of the Diocese of the Catholic church for the Azores.
- Had an important role in trans-Atlantic shipping.
- Cantos were a very important family in the Azores.
- In July of 1581 the Battle of Salga took place, many places were sacked by Castillians (Spaniards), however, Azores was victorious.
- Battle of Ponta Delgada was also fought here in July 1582, and Battle of Terciera in August of 1583.
- Anglo-Spanish war was fought from 1585-1604.
- Played a role in the exile of King Afonso VI during the Portuguese Restoration War.
- The liberal wars were fought in the 1800's.
- Major earthquake hit the 1 January 1980 damaged the city center.
- Has 19 civil parishes.[1]

In 1910, the Portuguese government transferred all birth, marriage, and death records from all the country's parishes to the district offices. These records are now in either District or National archives. Many of these records have been digitized and can be viewed at the District Archive's website or on FamilySearch.

If you are seeking church records created more recently than 1910, it is possible to obtain them by writing to the parish where the record was created. Writing to a parish is not always a reliable way to obtain information, because officials may or may not respond.

Cemeteries
Cemeteries did not become popular in Portugal until the late nineteenth century. Prior to this, individuals were buried in their parish church cemetery, and their bones were later removed to an unmarked burial place.
