Historical Overview

Templeport is a parish in the barony of Tullaghagh, county of Cavan, and province of Ulster a little over seven miles northwest of Killeshandra on the road from Ballyconnel to Swanlinbar. The living is a rectory and vicarage, in the diocese of Kilmore, and in the patronage of the Bishop; it was formerly united to the vicarage of Drumreilly, from which it was separated in 1835.
The Roman Catholic parish is co-extensive with that of the Established Church, and is divided into Upper and Lower Templeport. At one time there were four chapels in the parish.

The parish of Templeport is surrounded by the parishes of Drumreilly, Kildallan, Killinagh, Kinawley, and Tomregan, as well as the county of Leitrim. It is located in the poor law union of Bawnboy.

There are four separate graveyards in the parish of Templeport. They are
1. The Church of Ireland graveyard at St.Peter’s Church in Port townland. This contains both Protestant and Catholic burials from the 18th century to date. Headstone transcriptions online.
2. The Roman Catholic graveyard at St.Patrick’s Church, Kilnavart townland. It contains only Roman Catholic burials from the mid 19th century to date. Headstone transcriptions online.
3. The Roman Catholic graveyard at St.Mogue’s Church, Bawnboy. It contain only Roman Catholic burials from the 20th century to date. Headstone transcriptions online.
4. The medieval graveyard of St.Mogue on Inch Island in Port Lake. It contains only Roman Catholic burials from ancient times.

Civil Registration[edit | edit source]
