History[edit | edit source]
Stoby parish has medieval origins. The name, Stocby, in the 1150s, appears to be a combination of "stock" (log) with "by" (village, farm) with it's meaning lost to time. Limestone mining has been going on in the parish since before records were kept. The stone Stoby church was built in a Romanesque style during the 12th century. In the chancel and apse there are plaster paintings from around 1225.[1][2][3]
