Description
Spotsylvania County is located midway between the nation’s capital of Washington, D.C. and the Commonwealth of Virginia's capital, Richmond. Spotsylvania County was named for Alexander Spotswood, lieutenant governor of the Virginia colony from 1710 to 1720.[3]

History Timeline
The county was named after Virginia Lieutenant Governor Alexander Spotswood (c1676-1740), who was in office at the time of Spotsylvania County's organization.
