History
The valley of Conca, where San Giovanni in Marignano is located, was inhabited since the Paleolithic era. Romans founded an establishment there, which was most likely a farm for agricultural production and trade with the Mediterranean. In the second half of the thirteenth century, the town was moved to the plains, near the Ventena stream.
Jurisdictions:
- Under the Signoria dei Malatesta, under the nominal control of the State of the Church, in the fifteenth century.
- In 1504 it passed to Venice.
- In 1508 it was granted to the Dukes of Urbino.
- Except for the brief Napoleonic period from 1797 to 1814, it remained with the Holy See until 1859.
Major events:
- In 1438 and 1442, Sigismondo Pandolfo fortified San Giovanni in Marignano with a new wall, with six towers and two towers to defend Porta Pesaro and Porta Rimini.
- San Giovanni in Marignano was besieged unsuccessfully by Piccinino (1443).
- The farmers participated significantly in the agrarian revolts of 1913.
- The Second World War had a direct impact on the town, which was located on the Gothic Line. [1]
