History

Evidence of Roman settlement due to the Appian Way, with areas like San Giorgio Centro, Sant'Agnese, Ginestra, and San Giovanni a Morcopio being inhabited since Roman times. First official dates are from 1135. The oldest area of the town is Piano (Old Town).

Jurisdictions:

  • Until 1811: Hamlets of Montefusco, within the province of Principato Ultra.
  • Before the Spinelli Princes (1677): Fief of the Iamvilla family (given by Giovanna II), then the Malanotte family.

Major events:

  • Carlo III Spinelli (1678-1742) made significant contributions, including building a palace, fountain, warehouse, and church in Piazza Risorgimento.
  • 1720: Carlo III Spinelli founded a monastery of nuns, which later became the Educandado delle Salesiane.[1]
