Available Digitizing Equipment


The Sacramento California FamilySearch Center has a variety of equipment for you to use to scan and convert photos, slides, negatives, and documents. Please click on the "GET INFO - RESERVE" links to the right to learn about each scanner we have available.

  • The scanning process is complicated. Generally, the scanning process will go better after your first visit.
  • We do not provide flash drives. Please bring your own 8 - 16 GB USB 3.0 flash drive
  • Sort and organize your images and documents at home.
  • The scanners may be used only after receiving guidance from a technology-trained staff. We will teach you how to operate the equipment.
  • We will be available throughout your visit to answer your questions.
  • Please stop 10 minutes prior to the end of your session so our staff can clean the equipment for the next patron.

Photo/Slide/Document Scanners

EPSON Photo Scanners

We have two of EPSON Photo Scanners that have a Batch Photo (Foto) and a Flatbed scanner. The Batch scanner will accept materials up to 7" wide that are 2-sided. The Flatbed scanner will accept materials up to 8-1/2 x 11-1/2 inches. Both scanners are managed by a Windows-based computer.

EPSON Foto
The EPSON Foto Scanner converts old and new photos into JPEG or TIFF files in minutes. These digital images of color and black-and-white photos can be used to preserve memories and allow multiple options to share images. This photo scanner accommodates photos and documents up to 7 x 24 inches and scans up to 85 photos per minute. It will also scan both sides of the photo in a single pass to capture notes about the picture on the back.

The EPSON Flatbed
With the Flatbed scanner, multiple photos on an album page can be scanned and then saved as individual image files so there’s no risk of harm to them and album pages remain intact. This scanner can also be used for newspaper articles, documents, books, and various photos that will not properly feed through the photo scanner.

Home Preparation Prior to Using the Photo Scanner

For a successful experience, consider the following:
  • The photo scanner includes a Flatbed up to 8-1/2 x and 11-1/2" plus a separate 2-sided Batch scanner.
  • Ensure all sticky material is removed from photos.
  • Organize photos to maximize time on the scanner.
  • Separate photos by type color, black & white, and paper documents. These groups will be scanned differently.
  • Bring a flash USB drive with at least 8Gb or more of available space for a single session. [3.0 USB drive is required]
  • Plan to complete all efforts on the scanner within the scheduled time period

Kodak Scanza Negative Scanner

This scanner converts 35mm, 126, 110 negatives and slides into .jpg digital files. It can be connected to a large screen monitor to enhance the preview capability during the scanning session. It will also capture still-shot images from 8mm film reels.


CZUR Book Scanner

The Czur Book Scanner provides innovative AI Technology for enhanced scanning performance. It will scan all types of documents, but is best suited for bound books. Its revolutionary "Book Curve Flattening" technology minimizes damage to the binding while scanning. This technology uses three precise laser lines for incredible scanning accuracy and image clarity. It uses a 14 megapixel camera for superb image quality.

Typically, the final output will be a multi-page PDF document, but the Optical Character Recognition software can convert captured JPG images with typed text into editable Word, Excel or searchable PDF formats.

The software can auto-detect page turns to trigger the scan automatically or a convenient foot pedal can be used to control the triggering of the next scan while keeping your hands free.

Image corrections/adjustments can be made to your scanned images before the final output is created.


Home Preparation Prior to Using the Book Scanner

For a successful experience, consider the following:
  • Light glare can be a problem for books with glossy paper. Be prepared to adjust and compromise.
  • Take time to practice with a small set of pages before starting on the full book.
  • A staff member can help with the User Guide found on the computer desktop.
  • Bring a flash USB drive with at least 8Gb or more of available space. [3.0 USB drive is required]


Video Digitizer

This equipment with convert your VHS cassettes or Hi8 8mm Video tapes to a digital format. The captured video file can be provided in .mp4. The .mp4 format can be transferred to your own personal USB thumb drive.

The Video Digitizer may be reserved in two-hour sessions to convert your VHS cassettes, after which center staff will prepare the Video Digitizer for the next patron.

ScanPro 3000 Film Scanner

The ScanPro 3000 scans Microfilm and Microfiche. The Library has a significant collection of microfilms and a large number of documents on microfiche. The ScanPro has auto-feed capability for both films and fiche. The ScanPro is not a color scanner and only scans gray-scale.


Wolverine 8mm and Super 8mm Digitizer

The Wolverine digitizes 8mm and Super 8mm video films. Conversion time - A 3” in diameter film will take approximately 45 minutes to convert. Digital copies of your family's old 8mm films allow you to share your families memories.

At the end of your session, you will transfer your video from the Library's SD card to a USB flash drive. Bring a flash USB drive with at least 8Gb or more of available space. [3.0 USB drive is required]


35mm Slide Scanner

The Slide Scanner is the latest generation 35mm slide scanner. It employs a high optical resolution, large sensor Sony digital camera to automatically capture up to 15 film slides per minute. It will accept Kodak compatible carousels and the stack loader will accept groups of individual slides.

Home Preparation Prior to Using the Slide Scanner

For a successful experience, consider the following:
  • The scanner will take compatible Kodak carousels or individual stacks of slides
  • Organize slides to maximize time on the scanner - orient them all Landscape view
  • Blow or brush off dust to ensure the best quality image
  • Bring a flash USB drive with at least 8Gb or more of available space for a single session. [3.0 USB drive is strongly recommended]
  • Plan to complete all efforts on the scanner within the scheduled time period

Audio Digitizer

The Audio digitizer is connected to a Reel-to-Reel, a cassette, and a micro cassette player and allows audio to be digitized from any of these. We use the Audacity software to accomplish this.


Document Scanner

This scanner will accept multi-page documents through the automatic sheet feeder or individual pages on the flatbed scanner, then save them directly to a USB drive as .pdf files.

This document scanner is not scheduled and is available on a first-come, first-served basis. This scanner can be used until the scanner is needed by another patron. The document scanner also serve as a printer for the Library so you may notice other print jobs on the scanner.

Large Format Printer

The Printer will print 11" x 17" fan charts from TreeSeek.

This large format printer is not scheduled and is available on a first-come, first-served basis. This printer can be used until it is needed by another patron or staff.
It is recommended that patrons create a PDF of their fan chart on TreeSeek and put it on a flash drive and then use print the PDF on this printer.
