Bands and Groups

The term or designation of Pueblo Indians is a broad categorization of several groups and/or federally recognized tribes within the group so named. They are generally divided into the Eastern Villages or Pueblos, and the Western Villages.

The following Pueblos, all located in New Mexico, are tribal entities recognized by the Bureau of Indian Affairs:

• Acoma Pueblo
• Cochiti Pueblo
• Jemez Pueblo
• Isleta Pueblo
• Laguna Pueblo
• Nambe Pueblo

• Picuris Pueblo
• Pojoaque Pueblo
• San Felipe Pueblo
• San Juan Pueblo
• San Ildefonso Pueblo
• Sandia Pueblo

• Santa Ana Pueblo
• Santa Clara Pueblo
• Santo Domingo Pueblo
• Taos Pueblo
• Tesuque Pueblo
• Zia Pueblo

Records

The majority of records of individuals were those created by the agencies. Some records may be available to tribal members through the tribal headquarters.They were (and are) the local office of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and were charged with maintaining records of the activities of those under their responsibility. Among these records are:

Superintendency

The Santa Fe Agency was the representative of the United States Federal government until the creation of the New Mexico Superintendency on 9 September 1850 with the creation of New Mexico Territory.

Records for Superintendencies exist in the National Archives and copies of many of them are also available in other research facilities.
