History

The territory of Provaglio was inhabited in prehistoric times, with evidence of a pile-dwelling village. It was also inhabited during the Roman Empire, crossed by an important consular road. The parish separated from Iseo around 1200.

Jurisdictions:

  • In Roman times, it was crossed by a consular road connecting Brescia and Val Camonica along Lake Iseo.
  • It was part of the parish of Iseo before separating around 1200 to become a parish centered at the Monastery of San Pietro in Lamosa.
  • During the Venetian domination (lasting about three and a half centuries), Napoleonic, and Austrian periods, it was under their respective control.
  • In 1928, the abolished municipality of Provezze was aggregated to Provaglio.

Major events:

  • In the early 15th century, Pandolfo III Malatesta destroyed the castle.
  • It was involved in the often violent disagreements between Guelphs and Ghibellines.
  • In November 1629, a confrontation near Provaglio with fleeing lanzichenecchi resulted in about fifty deaths and eighteen prisoners.
  • In the spring of 1630, the plague struck Provaglio and Provezze hard, significantly reducing the population.
  • At the end of the 18th century, the first stone was laid for the new parish church of Saints Peter and Paul, completed in 1817.
  • The exploitation of peat deposits in the Lame began at the end of the 18th century and continued until the 1960s.
  • During the Second World War, peat excavation resumed.
  • In 1928, the municipality of Provezze was aggregated to Provaglio.
  • In 1993, a small museum illustrating the peat bogs was opened in Fontanì.
  • Until 1850, olive trees thrived in Provaglio, and this cultivation has been revived in recent decades.[1]
