History

Roman settlements existed in the area. A tomb dating back to that time was discovered in 1959. The Pieve of Provaglio Inferiore is identified since the 8th century.

Jurisdictions:

  • Initially owned by the Benedictine monastery of Leno.
  • Around 1337, it became a possession of the Visconti.
  • From 1427 to 1797, it was under the dominion of the Venetian Republic.
  • In 1797, it was under French rule.
  • After the fall of Napoleon, the territory returned to Austrian rule.
  • In June 1859, Provaglio became part of the Kingdom of Italy.

Major events:

  • During Roman times, the mountains were used for the extraction of silver and copper minerals.
  • On March 5, 1945, ten partisans of the 7th Matteotti Brigade were shot by the Black Brigades in Cesane.[1]
