History

The oldest archaeological finds date back to the Roman era (1931). In the Middle Ages, the first residential nucleus formed on the spur of Monte Netto.

Jurisdictions:

  • Part of the Roman district (pago) of Bagnolo Mella, which depended on the municipium of Brescia.
  • Until the 9th century, the entire territory was an immense estate administered by the State.
  • In the following century, it passed into the ownership of the Bishop of Brescia, who was appointed Count.
  • The nucleus of Poncarale was chosen by the Poncarali family, who administered the surrounding plain. The Bornati family of Bagnolo received the territory of Monte Netto.
  • From the 15th century, the province passed under the domination of the Malatesta family, then the Visconti family, the Scaliger family, and finally under the Republic of Venice. Poncarale became part of the Quadra of Capriano-Mairano and then Bagnolo.
  • In 1928, the municipalities of Poncarale and Flero were united into one, which lasted until 1956.

Major events:

  • The discovery of a vast Roman necropolis in Borgo Poncarale in 1931, with tombs, architectural ruins, and amphorae.
  • The existence of a wooden watchtower in the Roman era where La Rocca stands today.
  • The 14th century was a period of bloody battles, looting, and plagues, which significantly reduced the population.
  • The plague of 1630 caused many deaths.
  • Construction of the church of SS. Gervasio and Protasio began on the ruins of the medieval fortress and was completed in 1717.
  • During the Second World War, the Monte Netto hill became a refuge for many resistance partisans.
  • In the 1960s, a notable demographic expansion occurred following the construction of a large village (Villaggio Marcolini).[1]
